# Project phases

Group project tasks into clear stages for your team and customers.

**Where to find it:** **Settings → Templates → Project templates**\
**Who can access it:** Admins only

Group a project's tasks into phases. Your team and customers can then see the project's current stage at a glance.

### What it is

Phases split a project's task list into stages. Each task appears under its assigned phase, rather than in one long list.

You configure phases on a project template. Every project launched from that template uses the same grouping. Shared projects show the same phases in Shared Space.

### How phases work

A task custom field defines the phases. Create this field from the project template editor, using **Create new task custom field**. This gives the field the required subtype for phases. Do not create it in **Settings → Fields**.

Each field value maps to one phase. A task appears in the phase matching its selected value.

For example, create a field named **School start** with these values:

* Planning
* Preparation
* First week

Create a phase for each value. A task set to **Preparation** appears in that phase. Tasks without a matching value appear under **No phase**.

### Set up a phase project

1. Go to **Settings → Templates** and create a project template.
2. Scroll to **Project phases** in the template editor and select **Convert to phase project**.

3. Create the phase field. Select **Create new task custom field**, name it, and add one value per phase. You can also select an existing task custom field.
4. Select **Add phase**. Enter a **Phase title** and select its **Phase matching value**. Repeat for each phase.

5. Create the template tasks. Open each task and select its phase value.
6. Save the template.

To remove phases from a template, select **Revert to normal view**.

### Launch a project

Launch the project from the template as usual. Its task list is grouped by phase.

The project details show the selected field under **Default task phase field**. Customers see the same phases when you share the project in Shared Space.

### Customize the phase view

Converting a template creates a view named **\[Template name] phase view**. Find it at **Settings → Views → Project view → Project tasks → Alternative sections**.

The view includes these tabs:

* **All tasks by phase**
* **Open tasks by phase**
* **Board view**
* **Open tasks**
* **Completed tasks**

Open the view to edit its tabs. Use **Edit the criteria for when this view is visible** to control which projects use it.

### Troubleshooting

#### Tasks appear under No phase

The task has no phase value, or its value does not match a configured phase. Set the field on the task, or add a phase for that value.

#### The project is not grouped by phase

Phases apply only to projects launched after the template was converted. Earlier projects keep the normal task list. Confirm that the project came from the converted template.
